The church
Fortification work began in the beginning of the 15th century though the nave did not undergo any significant renovations mainly due to its height, which surpassed that of the choir. It was the latter which was more remarkably modified. The vault of the nave was restored in 1924, following damages that had occurred during an earthquake in 1880.

The nave currently has a barrel vault covered with a network of ribs. The chancel arch is fairly massive in order to sustain the elements of the cross-ribbed vault that covers the choir. Of some interest is the fact that the choir is not continued with an apse. It simply ends with a wall supported by buttresses from the outside. The southern and northern walls of the choir are also each supported by a pair of buttresses. Between the three eastern buttresses there are two round arch windows, while on the southern wall there is one with a pointed arch. As part of the fortification process, two levels were added to the choir and then were equipped with a wall passage. As in other churches, this level is accessed by a small cylindrical tower, placed on the south side, which also provides access to the side lofts. Furthermore, each of the upper floors of the choir is equipped with battlements.
The fortification
The precinct has an almost circular outline. At the end of the 19th century the 7-8 meter high walls were reduced to 2-3 meters. On the same occasion the northern and eastern towers were demolished, leaving only the gate-tower standing on the south side.
