Transylvania, with its name coming from Latin ultra silvam (beyond the forest), is one of the most interesting and surprising regions of Romania. Its German, Hungarian and Romanian cultural traditions play a great role in its cultural and ethnic diversity. The Transylvanian plateau is surrounded by mountain peaks and drained by sparkling rivers which makes it both a pleasant place for a relaxing holiday with a landscape pleasing to the eye and an exciting place for adventure-seeking travellers.

BIERTAN / BIRTHAELM
How to get there
Coming from Sighisoara, you have to follow the road to Medias (DN 14). After about 18 km the road will pass through the village Saros. In this village you’ll see the road sign pointing you to Biertan. There you’ll have to make a left on a secondary road (the scenery on this one is spectacular!) and drive straight for another 8 km until you reach Biertan village.
Coming from Sibiu you follow the same road DN 14 in direction to Sighisoara and after approx 74 km you’ll reach the village Saros and you’ll have to make a right for Biertan. (see the directions above)
Coming from Sibiu there is also another way to reach Biertan on a not so well-known and traveled but very scenic road along the valey of Hartibaciu river: you take the road to Agnita until you reach Birghis village; there you take the road to Medias and after 12 km, when passing a forest, you’ll make a right on a secondary road towards Richis (this intersection is not signed, but it’s the only secondary road). This road is not paved for about 1 km but it leads you very easy and smothly into Richis and, after a blink of an eye, in Biertan.
The coordinates for the fortified church (GPS): N46 08.120 E24 31.278
Altitude: 390 m

You can also reach Biertan by bus. The busses leave from the bus station in Medias (Unirii Str. No. 11) (only on workdays). Take the bus with the destination Richis. Departures: 7.30; 12.10; 15.40; 19.30; 23.30.
The People you have to meet
You definitely have to meet the most enthusiastic, well-documented and full of stories guides in Transylvania: Cristian Sencovici and Cristha Richter. If they are not out with a group, you will find them at the guesthouse DORNRÖSCHEN. They are very welcoming and always happy to meet travellers. So this is a MUST for those who would like to know more about Transylvania or for those who simply like a good story!

Casa DORNRÖSCHEN
It is a guest house which invites to linger. Situated between two defense walls in the shadow of the fortified church, it bears a particular atmosphere. You feel free and protected at the same time. Centuries ago the first boy’s school stood here and later it became the Saxon kindergarten.
After 1990, the large building, property of the Lutheran Church, was transformed into a guest house with beautiful rooms. On the ground floor there are rooms with own bath, on the first floor, attic rooms with bunk beds and common facilities. The room for serving breakfast is bright and comfortable but in summertime the best choice is probably to have breakfast outside. Our guests will not be disturbed by any noise, worries and stress stay far away.

The guest house is administrated by a Romanian Austrian team. When the Austrian saw the house for the first time, he exclaimed: "Only the roses are missing to make it a perfect Sleeping Beauty castle."
Who would like to participate in making this dream come true? Each of our guests is invited to plant a rose and when all roses sprout, maybe a fairy tale will come to life. We are waiting for you!
