CURCIU / KRITSCH

The fortification

The mantle wall of the stronghold follows an oval path, and is reinforced by 20 buttresses built with river stones.

The church

Curciu07

The church stands in the centre of the precinct and can be accessed by two doorways. The smaller one on the southern facade has a two-step embrasure, with no base or capitals. The main doorway is on the western facade of the bell tower, which in turn is attached to the main body of the church. The doorway has a five-step embrasure with small columns from the early 15th century. It also has a frieze, richly decorated with vegetation motifs, human figures and animals, including monkey heads, a camel, a pig's head, a dog's head and many others. On the front side of the doorway, there still are some brackets and canopies which probably supported statues.

FOCUS
Copsa Mare / Grosskopisch
A free commune of the old Fundus Regius, Copsa Mare used to have some of the most vast and famous vineyards of the region, "The Wine Country". Two churches are mentioned as being used in this town. In the early 14th century, the holy service was recorded as being held in a three-nave gothic basilica; a 1283 document introduces the hypothesis of an earlier church.
