ASTRA FILM Sibiu 2007
01 mar 2007 AD

Astra Film is an international film festival of documentary film and visual anthropology which takes place from the 22 – 28 October, but the organisers will present documentaries from the Astra Collection almost daily during the year of the Cultural European Capital.

This week at the Astra Film Studio (Piata Huet):

Miina! A Finnish film directed by Lasse Naukkarinen. Miina Akkijyrkka is the only one who fights against the common agricultural policy of the European Union protecting a Finnish species of cows which is not recognized by the EU. She is always different, always against the mainstream and thus has an agitated life. She is a controversed person, some hate her and some love her. Discover yourself on whose side you are – on the 6th of March, 5PM.

The Shinjuku Boys, a film by Kim Longinotto and Jano Williams, Great Britain. Shot in a night club in Tokyo, the film features a group of young women who have decided to live as men and work in this club. Other women visiting the club often have relationships with the “onnabe”. But the big question is if such a relationship can rezist the social pressure exercised on a woman – to get married and have children. 7th of March, 2PM.

Something about the Queen Maria, a Romanian film directed by Sorin Iliesiu. The movie is about the life of Queen Maria, born in Britain and living in Romania, and seems to be a true and personal confession. 8th of March, 2PM.

The dead rule, a film by Gary Kildea and Andrea Simon, Australia. The film tells the story of an influential political and religious movement in the East New Britain island in Papua New Guineea. It is a very impressive and moving film. 9th of March, 2PM.
FOCUS
Biertan / Birthaelm
The folks of Biertan, sensible people but with a tendency to be on the stingy side, claimed that the people of Medias, who were up to no good, had tricked them. The story goes that, long ago, representatives of the two burgs were sent to the King so he would decide which one of the two would be the capital for the seat of the county.
