Transylvania, with its name coming from Latin ultra silvam (beyond the forest), is one of the most interesting and surprising regions of Romania. Its German, Hungarian and Romanian cultural traditions play a great role in its cultural and ethnic diversity. The Transylvanian plateau is surrounded by mountain peaks and drained by sparkling rivers which makes it both a pleasant place for a relaxing holiday with a landscape pleasing to the eye and an exciting place for adventure-seeking travellers.

Garden-Atelier
05 apr 2009
The participants are 13 professionals and students in the fields of Landscape Architecture, Organic Farming and Art from Romania, Germany and Austria. During the 5 days, they will explore the village and particulary the garden of the Fortified Church within different activities in a creative way. At the same time, they will become proactive themselves: specified areas of the garden, currently abandoned and unused, are going to be the setting for a garden- installation and temporary reclamation. Furthermore, several activities with children of the village are planned. The celebration of different Easter-customs is another main focus of the programme.Participants and inhabitants should be sensitized in a creative way for the uniqueness of the region of South-Transylvania. The garden of the church-ensemble thereby becomes a place of social and cultural encounter. The workshop should also give an impetus to the sustained revitalization of the historical centre of Apold.

The "Garden-Workshop" is organized by Marlen Hoesselbarth and Leonie Rhode. Since 2008 they are operating under the name of "transage" as freelancers in the field of Landscape Architecture and -Education in Romania and Germany. By their work in projects in the domain of Urban- and Regional Planning in Romania they put their focus on often neglected green and open spaces in the urban and rural context in Romania.
"transage" are the initiators and coordinators of the project "Green trApPOLD - Public green and open spaces in the rural area of Transylvania using the example of Apold/Trappold". This is an interdisciplinary project with components of Garden and Landscape Architecture, preservation of historic monuments (gardens), development of local tourism, education, environmental education and of intercultural dialogue and community building. They focus on the public open and green spaces, the garden of the Fortified Church and the direct surroundings of the ensemble in Apold. The project is carried out in co-operation with the associations "Corona - Association for the Promotion of Local Initiatives" (Berlin) and "casApold – Local Initiative for Intercultutal Activities" (Apold) and is supported by "Fundatia ADEPT" and private persons.
