Klezmer workshops
07 jun 2009 AD
Klezmer music is the traditional music of Eastern European Jewish communities. It developed over many centuries in Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, the Baltic States, Western Russia and, of course, Romania.
It influenced and was influenced by the folk music of the various cultural regions in which Jewish communi ties existed, creating a rich and complex musicaltapestry reflecting its diverse roots. In the past 1015 years however, festivals around the globe have embraced the music, including but not limited to Krakow, London, Montreal, New York, Paris, Toronto, Vienna, Weimar and St. Petersburg.
Jeff Warschauer and Deborah Strauss

For over 25 years, Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer have been at the forefront of the international klezmer and Yiddish music scene. They were both long-time members of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, one of the premiere groups of the klezmer revival, and have performed with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman on film and in concert.
As the Strauss/Warschauer Klezmer Duo, they have performed to overwhelming acclaim in such diverse venues as the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Great Britain’s Fiddles on Fire, the Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow, Poland, and the Art of Yiddish in Los Angeles w
with actor and singer Theodore Bikel. Deborah and Jeff are Yiddish speakers, and have researched and collected Yiddish and Hebrew songs and instrumental melodies since the 1980s. They lead some of the most popular klezmer music, Yiddish song and traditional dance workshops throughout North America, Eastern and Western Europe. Jeff is artistic director of the KlezKanada Institute for Yiddish/Jewish Culture and the Arts, and is on the faculty of Columbia University in New York. Deborah is arts and programming director of two New York Yiddish afternoon schools for children. Both are on the faculty of KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts Program and KlezFest at the University of London.
Benjy Fox-Rosen

Benjy Fox-Rosen is a Yiddish singer, bassist and composer living in Brooklyn, New York City. Benjy has toured internationally performing throughout the United States and Europe as a member of the Luminescent Orchestrii and leading his own ensemble, which serves as a forum to explore new Yiddish music. The band performs new renderings of Yiddish folk songs as well as settings of Yiddish poetry that Benjy has composed. Additionally, Benjy performs regularly as a bassist with many of New York's Klezmer, Hungarian, Jazz and improvising musicians. He has taught at the well-known Yiddish Folks Arts Program, “KlezKamp” and having toured Romania once before, is excited to return.
Workshop I: Making Your Instrument Sing In Yiddish: A Klezmer Workshop for Everyone
Whether you are an experienced klezmer player, or new to the style, this handson workshop will offer you a feast of Eastern European Yiddish instrumental music. Taught with a lively, integrated approach—a marriage of instruments, singing and movement—we will explore new ways to express klezmer music’s full potential, both as a group and as individuals.
Workshop II: A Redele iz di Gore Velt (The Whole World is But a Wheel): Life’s Lessons in Yiddish Song
Yiddish songs speak to us across time and space, borders and boundaries, illuminating every facet of human experience—love, humor, morality, religion and politics, to name but a few. We’ll sing traditional and contemporary Yiddish songs that explore the lessons, insights and wisdom of this rich musical heritage. No previous experience or Yiddish knowledge necessary. All ages, levels and backgrounds welcome.
Workshop III: Yiddish Dance Workshop
We encourage everyone to take part in Yiddish dancing. It is an exuberant way to get the feel for Yiddish music. Deborah Strauss leads the dances with live musical accompaniment by Jeff Warschauer and Benjy FoxRosen. This workshop will be geared to the needs and abilities of the participants, and is suitable for all ages.
