Sighisoara: plans for new paving
07 apr 2007 AD

For more than 5 weeks an intense debate is going on in Sighisoara (Transylvania) over the plans of a local lobby group to change the cobblestone and old cubic stone paving of the main streets of the citadel with a completly new paving made of new cubic stones.

The NGO "Sustainable Sighisoara", strongly opposes these plans, together with other local NGOs and hundreds of locals, tourists, architects, fans and friends of Sighisoara (for more details see the protest module and minipoll on www.sighisoara.com.). We consider the project to be nonsense, distructive, expensive, theft of public money and simply ILLEGAL  (ignoring UNESCO standards and violating local construction regulations). Moreover - the repaving project can be considered to be a new provocation of Sighisoara townhall towards UNESCO - to determine it to get the citadel OFF the world heritage list!

The good news is that on  Wednesday, April 4, the regional monuments authority (CZMI), rejected, at its monthly meeting in Sibiu the project of changing the old cobble and cubic stones in Sighisoara citadel for new ones. The final decision will, nevertheless, be that of the National Monuments Commission in Bucharest (CNMI).

Anyway - the Regional Commission's decision is a first important victory for us! Bucharest's final decision for or against the old paving in Sighisoara will be a signal concerning Romania's future heritage preservation policy! Therefore it is of crucial importance to convince Bucharest to make the right decision for keeping and restoring our old paving in Sighisoara, instead of changing and destroying it!

FOCUS
Biertan / Birthaelm
The folks of Biertan, sensible people but with a tendency to be on the stingy side, claimed that the people of Medias, who were up to no good, had tricked them. The story goes that, long ago, representatives of the two burgs were sent to the King so he would decide which one of the two would be the capital for the seat of the county.
